It houses a number of streets named after prominent college institutions. Some include Purdue, Duke, Villanova, Marquette, Vanderbilt, Wakeforest, Fordham and Annapolis.In 1908, the president of the South End Land Company founded Bellaire after purchasing 9,449 acres of land. According to advertising fliers, the name was chosen because of the area’s gulf breezes.
In 1893, W.R. McElroy bought 80 acres in the same vicinity and began to promote the area. To tie his promotion into the advertising by Cash and Luckle and help sales in St. Louis, he called the new town Missouri City.Tracy Maness, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographerNamed for its location on the northeastern curve of the Houston Ship Channel, which was populated by blue-collar oil refinery workers and their families in the early 1900s.
