“A lot has been said about Joker,“ a studio spokesperson said on Friday, “and we just feel it’s time for people to see the film.”
However, at the start of the film, Phillips did not introduce the cast and producers, which is out of the ordinary. Instead,notes, he made a joke: “If you like the movie, tell a friend. We haven’t gotten enough press.”
Despite strong reviews out of the festival circuit, including raves for Phoenix as the depraved Gotham villain, the film has been met with some fear and skepticism as it approaches its October 4 wide-release date. Considering its plot—a dark, loner origin story about Batman’s most notorious villain, the Joker—critics have been concerned that it might inspire viewers to incite violence.

The studio swiftly released a response, noting that “gun violence in our society is a critical issue,” and that it donates to victims of violence, including Aurora. “Make no mistake: Neither the fictional character Joker, nor the film, is an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind,” the statement continued. “It is not the intention of the film, the filmmakers, or the studio to hold this character up as a hero.
