'When you’re prepared, you just feel better. I want to go in and win. Our team wants to win, period.'
Julie Ertz, 27, joins the no. 1 ranked U.S. Women's National Soccer Team to compete against France in Friday's quarter final round of the 2019 World Cup.
Ertz, who joined the team 7 years ago, is a starting defensive back, Olympian, and reigning World Cup champion.Soccer fan or not, it's hard not to get excited over the success the U.S. Women's National Team has seen in this year's World Cup. The team, who's currently ranked number one in the world, had a record-breaking 13-0 win against Thailand in the first round and will take on France today for the quarter finals.
In addition to a top-tier coaching staff led by Jill Ellis, the U.S. 2019 World Cup roster is stacked with veteran athletes and leaders, like Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Julie Ertz, who have held the standard for excellence for women's soccer since the history-making 1999 roster became world champions in the first ever women's World Cup.
Ertz, one of the most versatile players in the game who typically starts as a defensive back, says that she loves being a part of the climb toward success and equality in women's sports."You represent your country—it’s such an honor," she said."Every time that you put on the crest, you are representing the country. You want to play well."
And for that reason, Ertz works hard on and off the field to get her body and mind in the best shape leading up to the World Cup. Here's how the athlete prepares to win gold. For Julie, it's all about core work—which explains her six pack."I think core is really important cause it’s the center of your body," she said."Core machines are great but I do everything on the floor.
