George Miller explains how Gollum inspired Happy Feet after cinematographer Andrew Lesnie showed him footage: '... he showed us the first motion capture of Gollum...In that moment, I thought, Oh my God, the penguins can dance.'
Gollum from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy served as a crucial inspiration for George Miller's Happy Feet, the legendary writer/director reveals. Based on J.R.R Tolkien's beloved fantasy epic, The Lord of the Rings sees Hobbit Frodo Baggins entrusted to destroy the chaotic Ring of Power and subsequently defeat its creator, the elementally evil Dark Lord Sauron.
During the events of the second film, The Two Towers, Frodo encounters the creature known as Gollum , who once possessed the Ring for centuries and desires it back. Grappling with two conflicting personalities, Gollum alternately aids and plots against Frodo and Sam as they continue with their task to destroy the Ring, eventually turning against them and attempting to murder them both.
With Happy Feet, I had the film, I had the story...but I wasn’t sure how to do it as an animation...Andrew Lesnie, who shot the Babe movies, went on to shoot the Lord of the Rings movies. He came back from Lord of the Rings, and he showed us the first motion capture of Gollum...In that moment, I thought, Oh my God, the penguins can dance. Suddenly, that then made it a reality, because I didn’t think we could get good dancing from animation...But motion capture made it much more viable.
This certainly proved to be a successful move on Miller's part, as Happy Feet enjoyed an impressive box office and positive reviews, as well as becoming the fourth movie to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature not to have been made by Disney or Pixar. Miller also adds that he had previously considered more old-fashioned techniques to animate his dancing penguins - primarily rotoscoping, in which animators trace over live-action footage frame-by-frame.
Miller's revelation that The Lord of the Rings' groundbreaking visual effects are what essentially made Happy Feet possible further solidifies the influence and significance the fantasy trilogy had on contemporary cinema. It also further illustrates Miller's commitment to utilizing special effects in unique ways, with his employment of visual and practical effects in other movies such as Babe and Mad Max: Fury Road showcasing this as well.
