Then the one where she experiments. “The sad room,” Melake says. “It’s super bare bones because it’s just for making a mess in here. It’s only for making chairs. The chairs made in this apartment had to be kept at around 27 inches wide at the smallest dimension to comfortably fit through the doorways and through the hall. It’s kind of a good restraint because clients won’t have to worry about getting it in their space if it can fit through mine.
The Ikea bookcase holds Melake’s collection of design books. The woven art in the plexiglass case is by Ed Rossbach. “He is one of my weaving idols. Last year at MAD, they asked me to teach this basket-weaving class. I learned it just so I could teach this workshop, then I spent the money I made buying a real Ed Rossbach!”
This birdhouse covered in rubber was designed for a Brooklyn Botanic Garden show in 2022. “We had to do a lot of research for that show,” Melake says, noting that one of the things she discovered was that certain birds prefer to nest in man-made objects, like pipes and shoes, even glove compartments of abandoned cars, where they feel protected.The Living Room:
