Chemists working for marijuana companies and testing labs are developing those standards and some are legally protecting their ideas. "The chocolate itself is affecting our ability to measure the cannabinoids within it," said David Dawson, chemist and lead researcher at CW Analytical Laboratories in Oakland, California, which tests marijuana.

Some in the marijuana industry hold"a mythical belief in the goddess of cannabis," Roggen said, but chemists view marijuana more objectively. For its part, the industry is learning to accept the"new guard of scientists with a different approach to the plant," he said.
