The Nun 2 has a good chance of turning a profit.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT With the latest Conjuring universe outing, The Nun II, hitting theaters soon, it’s worth looking into the film’s costs, as well as what it needs to earn at the box office. The Nun II is the ninth film in the Conjuring universe, a franchise that has come to dominate the modern horror landscape. The movie is a direct sequel to 2018’s The Nun, which itself is a spinoff/prequel to The Conjuring 2.
While The Nun failed to impress critics, it proved a massive box office success, making the follow-up a no-brainer for the studio. The Nun sequel is directed by Michael Chaves, who helmed two other Conjuring movies, The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
The Nun certainly justified its higher budget, ultimately pulling in $363 million at the box office, a record high for the franchise. Conjuring universe sequels generally see their budgets set twice as high as the original film. Annabelle: Creation cost $15 million compared to the original’s $6.5 million, and The Conjuring 2’s budget of $40 million was exactly double that of the original film. Given The Nun’s success, there’s no reason the studio won’t continue the doubling trend.
The Nun 2 Needs To Make At Least $87.5-100M At The Box Office To Succeed The Nun II’s production costs are estimated at between $35 and $40 million, but the film’s marketing and publicity budget may be even higher. A general rule of thumb with mainstream releases is that a film's gross needs to be double its listed budget in order to cover production and advertising costs. However, the rule is slightly different for major horror movies.
As such, it’s probable that The Nun II will have an overall budget closer to two and a half times its production budget. In such a case, the film would need to pull in between $87.5 million and $100 million in order to turn a profit. It’s a tall order, but extremely feasible for the Conjuring franchise, which has seen massive returns on every one of its films. Even the lowest-grossing installment, The Curse of La Llorona, pulled in $123 million on a budget of only $9 million.
