'The wild horses are better equipped to handle a hurricane than most of us humans living on the Outer Banks,' the Corolla Wild Horse Fund wrote.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund—a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of horses in the region—is confident its herd will be able to weather the storm, pointing out that they've done so for centuries.
Founded in 1989, the mission of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund is to"protect, conserve, and responsibly manage the herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roaming freely on the northernmostOuter Banks." The nonprofit currently houses 17 rescued horses and aims to"promote the continued preservation of this land as a permanent sanctuary for horses designated as the State Horse and defined as a cultural treasure by the state of North Carolina.
