, the at-home rape kits have been donated to Monterey County by a company called the Preserve Group, which is one of two DIY rape kit companies, both of which came under fire last year when they were accused of trying to profit off trauma. The other rape kit company, The MeTooKit Company, wrote to lobbyists in New Hampshire earlier this month, promoting its kit as a way to “save countless lives,” Mother Jones reports.

Nassoura, the Monterey County Deputy DA, agrees that this is an imperfect solution, but says it’s the best one they have right now, and they’ve done everything they can to ensure chain of custody remains unbroken, including a nurse watching while the survivor performs the exam and an officer ready to take the kit as soon as the exam is completed.
