How one Bay Area hospice is reimagining care for terminally ill children and their families paid firstrepublic

Earlier in her career, as a psychologist working in a pediatric intensive care unit, Kathy Nicholson Hull found herself sitting with the families of terminally ill children as monitors beeped, fluorescent lights glared and an elevated train rumbled somewhere beyond the walls of the building. It occurred to her that adults had the option of living their final days in dignity and calm at a hospice.

“It’s incredibly meaningful to be able to say, ‘You don’t have to do this by yourselves. Here’s this extraordinary team of professionals who can help you,’” Hull says. “Parents can catch up on their sleep and just be parents, without also having to provide hands-on medical care.” Even today there are only three pediatric hospices open in the United States and another 20 in some stage of development. Why the unmet need? Hull believes that Americans are uniquely hesitant to discuss issues related to death and dying. They also tend to have an abidingly optimistic faith that the medical system can cure every child.

The U.S. pediatric community is slowly learning to accommodate the special needs of terminally ill children. In October, George Mark is sponsoring the first West Coast summit on pediatric palliative care. And while palliative care can take place in a hospital, Hull believes that children and their families need a place of their own—just as adults do.The right bank can help ensure the sustainability of a nonprofit like George Mark and help it find room to grow.
