After Planned Parenthood parted ways with the Title X program, longer waits, delayed care, and possible clinic closures may loom in the future.
, the nation’s only family planning program that helps low-income patients, after the Trump administration enforced a new restriction saying organizations that perform or refer patients for abortions will no longer qualify for grants. Even if an organization uses separate funding to provide abortion care , now it can’t get any money at all if it refers patients to or performs abortions.
, “I work with women who, if the price of their birth control went up by five dollars, they would not be able to afford it. And they aren’t joking.” “Anything that threatens the regular, high-quality and uninterrupted care that was being funded for 4 million people is an absolute declaration of war against Black women, against low-wage workers, and there’s no other way to see it,” Merritt said.
Family planning groups’ withdrawals from Title X could be considered as the “first step of the broader unraveling process,” according to Emily Nestler, the Center for’ senior staff attorney working on the lawsuit filed by Maine Family Planning against the Department of Health and Human Services over the gag rule.
Some women already “drive impossible distances” to access abortion services , but the new gag rule may mean that patients will have to do the same for resources like birth control, according to Planned Parenthood.
