His strength exploits in the weight room were well established, and teammates voted him a captain before his final college season. All that paired with the person and athlete Ross directly worked with in the several weeks leading up to the combine.
There was no shortage of talented defensive linemen at EXOS. Between Carter, McDonald, Smith and Cincinnati Bengals No. 28 pick Myles Murphy, four first-round picks comprised the group. Still, Ross said, Smith emerged as a leader with his engaging personality, able to keep the mood light between strength maneuvers that were heavy.
Despite lengthy 33 3/4-inch arms, Smith completed a 460-pound rep on the bench press at EXOS with ease, Ross said. He also showed the sort of athleticism that supports the Cowboys’ belief he can, with a change in stance, provide more pass rush ability than his 0.5 career sacks at Michigan would suggest.
Smith measured 6-3 and 323 pounds at the combine in Indianapolis, completing 34 reps on the 225-pound bench press.“He is more introverted than Mazi, but he was so grateful for everything,” Ross said. “He was really hungry, really driven and intrinsically motivated. Athlete-wise, he is also a freak. Like I said, he had the most powerful lower body output numbers in that one test. … Some of the highest [vertical jumps] we had with him here were 37 and 38 [inches].
“I think he would have been a 4.4 guy or maybe faster based on how he was trending here,” Ross said. “His best splits, with front 20 and back 20, were on track for a 4.42. Both laser. [The pro day 40] is just not an accurate representation of what he can do. That man is extremely explosive, extremely powerful and fast.”
