— also known as car-free Great Highway — running along Ocean Beach. Right now, the area is open to people on Friday afternoons, weekends and holidays. San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, and Mayor London Breed, can do better than that. They can seize on a unique opportunity and approve a 24/7 park instead, one that provides a more livable and sustainable future on our oceanfront.
The will of the voters is clear. One month ago, an overwhelming 65% of San Franciscans rejected Proposition I, which would have eliminated Great Highway Park and allowed private automobile traffic on the Upper Great Highway 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Voters sent a message that San Franciscans want Great Highway Park to remain open to people — not cars — and if anything, our elected officials should be expanding park hours.
Most people didn't realize that Great Highway Park was only permitted under the city’s COVID-19-related emergency order, and could have gone away at any moment. That’s why Supervisor Gordon Mar introduced legislation in June to preserve Great Highway Park as a three-year pilot until Dec. 31, 2025, allowing city agencies to study usage and traffic patterns that will inform a long-term decision.
