If you’ve lived in San Francisco for any amount of time, there’s a very good chance you’ve been to Zeitgeist. Hell, even if you don’t live here, you’ve probably been before. Zeitgeist is the kind of place where you run into friends you didn’t even know were in town visiting. Everyone passes through its doors at some point.
My first visit was in the summer of 2002. I had recently moved to SF, my buddy Mani and I shared a room with no door and slept on air mattresses. We spent all our free time wandering the city, with the hopes of somehow truly becoming part of it. Walking down the hill toward Lower Haight on a cold and foggy summer night, our third roommate Peter told me about Zeitgeist. He said it was loud and smelly and not much more than a bunch of picnic tables in a backyard, but the drinks were hella cheap.
