The funds are the result of a ruling in a national lawsuit that determined multiple drug manufacturers were partially responsible for the U.S. opioid epidemic.

“I really wanted to spend the first six months listening to testimonies from those with lived experience and understanding what are the existing current programs,” Hedberg said. “And then the question was, what are the gaps to address?” Carson said in an interview that he was particularly glad to see so many prevention-based strategies on the list of possible uses for the funds.
