Large swaths of Manhattan were plunged into darkness Saturday night following a massive power outage. The blackout, which left tens of thousands of customers in the dark, brought Broadway shows to a halt and left people trapped in subway cars.
At its peak, the New York blackout shut off power to about 73,000 customers in Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side, officials with the utility company Con Edison said.
