“I really loved the age diversity on the team,” Dracht said. “Many of these women were several years ahead of me and they were running so well. If they could do it, I could do it.”—just three and a half minutes shy of the Olympic B-standard of 2:45. Not long after the December race, one of the club’s members, Gwen Twist, announced her plan to do Grandma’s Marathon in June 2019.. “I said, ‘It’s flat, it’s fast, and you’re from the Midwest.’” Convinced, Dracht signed up for the race.
Three weeks before Grandma’s, Dracht did a 15-mile run at her planned marathon pace of 6:10 per mile. “It was late in the training cycle and I was tired, but I still managed to maintain around a 6:10,” she said. “That gave me confidence that I could [break 2:45].”
