It’s been an eventful summer, which is surprising considering there’s no one around. Like the rest of France, Toulouse is on les Grandes Vacances. The annual congé payé, when French workers head to the beach or hills for the month of July or August, is in full swing and the city is a ghost town. Our favourite foodie haunts are shut and our friends have abandoned us, but the biggest struggle has been the lack of childcare.
Speaking of which, my gynaecologist is also OOO. Becky, whose son Seb was born in September, warned me of the difficulties of accessing any kind of antenatal care in August. Still, I expected there’d be someone around to at least answer the phone at the clinic where I’m due to give birth in six weeks time. It might have prevented an embarrassing showdown at Toulouse airport the other week.
