According to a recent analysis, neurotypical siblings of children with autism tend to struggle with anxiety, depression, and social difficulties. However, researchers found that autistic children with typical older siblings have better social skills than those without siblings.
With a neurotypical child, finding the words to explain what autism is can be difficult. Ian Santus, M.S., BCBA, LBA, COBA, Director of Learning and Development at"It's healthy to have conversations about differences between people, and that it is ok," Santus explained."I believe you should describe specific differences such as, sometimes he prefers to play alone or doesn't like to be around other people.
Similarly, Kerr points out that this will not be a"one-time conversation." As the sibling grows, their understanding will expand, and they may have more questions. "Siblings often resent that they must take on additional responsibilities in the home or miss out on activities because of their sibling," said Kerr."Allowing your child to experience their emotions without judgment is critical to keeping an open line of communication."to feel guilty because their sibling has it and they don't. Or they may feel bad because simple tasks and concepts come much easier than their siblings.
