Today, every CMSD student is offered a free breakfast and lunch on school days through Ohio’s Community Eligibility Provision – a program the district qualifies for because more than 40% of students meet the threshold for free school meal eligibility.

Her family, who, she says, “got by, but certainly wasn’t wealthy,” relied on affordable lunches during the school year and meals provided to students and their families during the summer. She remembers walking with her siblings and her babysitter up to the school those summer months to pick up the meals, while her mom was at work. It was a vital resource that the district continues to offer to its students to this day.
“At the end of the day, hungry kids can’t learn. There’s research that shows kids who come to school hungry have a hard time focusing, learning and taking tests,” said Mallory Packard, area supervisor for CMSD’s nutrition department. “Being able to make sure kids start their day with breakfast is one of the most important things about education. For the kids who come to school hungry, it’s key to learning.
Once a month, the Food Bank sends out 4,000 pounds of fresh food and produce to the school to be given out during Market Day which runs nine months out of the year. And though the focus is to get additional food resources to students and their families, the market is open and marketed to the entire community.
