By the time Rashad Reckley and his family knew Dorian was definitely coming their way, it was too late.
Joshua Solomon and Sommer BrugalSTUART, Fla. — Rashad Reckley greeted U.S. Customs in a gray tank top, dirtied white basketball shorts and sandals. He had been in the same clothes for three days.
During the storm, Reckley saw buildings leveled, cars wrecked, churches flattened and cars carried down the street. By Monday, he and Thompson decided to leave their home, which was 13 feet under water. The Reckleys eventually made their way to nearby churches running shelters in their respective neighborhoods. Typically a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk, it took Rashad and Thompson an hour to walk through the debris.
The Bahamian National Emergency Management Agency on Friday issued an evacuation notice for residents of the Abaco Islands. The agency said it will now begin evacuations with the nation’s national airline, BahamasAir. Prime Minister Hubert Minnie arrived in the Abaco Islands Friday to begin assessment of the damage.
