Victims of Hurricane Ian in North Carolina and South Carolina have a few weeks left to claim storm-related tax relief afforded by the states' disaster declarations from the September hurricane.

Carolina taxpayers have until Feb. 15 to file tax returns and make tax payments that were due between September and February. The extension is available to anyone who lives in or has a business in either state. Other tax relief included a deduction for related losses and fee waivers.Taxpayers do not need to contact the IRS to get the relief benefits, but they should reach out if they receive a late payment or filing notice.

Those who live outside of the affected areas but were affected by the storm should call the IRS at 866-562-5227, according to Kiplinger Magazine. People whose property was lost or damaged due to the hurricane can get reimbursed by filing an itemized list on their schedule A or schedule C tax returns. However, on a schedule C return, they must be able to list the item as a business loss. The deductions can be claimed on the tax return for the year the damage or loss of property occurred or for the previous year.Hurricane Ian largely affected Florida. It was the deadliest storm to hit Sunshine State since 1935.
