A hurricane watch is in effect for parts of the northeastern U.S. coastline as Tropical Storm Henri set on a path to become the first hurricane to hit New England in 30 years
Tropical Storm Henri could become the first hurricane to hit New England in 30 years, bringing potentially dangerous storm surges, heavy rain and strong winds to the region this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Friday.
A hurricane watch was in effect for parts of the Northeastern coastline, including parts of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A storm-surge watch was in effect across parts of the south shore of Long Island, N.Y., and from Kings Point, N.Y., through Sagamore Beach, Mass., as well as Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island.
Tropical Storm Henri—recently about 345 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 745 miles south of Montauk Point on Long Island—is expected to head north Friday night and make landfall in southern New England by Sunday. The storm’s maximum sustained winds are currently close to 65 miles per hour, and forecasters from the National Hurricane Center anticipate it will become a hurricane by Saturday.
The last hurricane to directly hit New England was Bob in August 1991, according to the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.orecasts predicting between 3 and 5 feet of flooding across coastal areas in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and between 2 to 4 feet in the area from Flushing, N.Y., to Watch Hill, R.I. Between Sunday and Monday, 2 to 5 inches of rain are forecast to pour over New England, with some areas seeing totals of up to 8 inches, the National Hurricane Center said.
