Interstate 5 north of Redding in far Northern California was closed in both directions on Thursday evening as an atmospheric river dumped copious amounts of rain and snow, Caltrans said.
The situation is changing rapidly, and snow levels are expected to rise this evening and on Friday; consultJust south of the closure, Redding saw 5 inches of snow on Thursday at Sundial Bridge, said Johnnie Powell, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. The Redding Regional Airport recorded about 2 inches.
By 7 p.m., Powell said the precipitation falling at the Redding Airport had turned from snow to rain. The snow level"is working it’s way up," he said."It won’t be long. If you’re up above 5,000 feet, it may stick around a bit longer." The storm over California is pulling in moisture from near the Hawaiian Islands, and snow levels are expected to
by Friday morning. Over the weekend, snow levels are expected to lower to 4,500 to 6,500 feet, according to the weather service.
