The collapsed section of I-95 in North Philadelphia will reopen far earlier than expected after a whirlwind project to build a new highway on recycled glass fill.

is scheduled to reopen on a temporary structure built less than two weeks after the incident that severed one of the nation’s busiest highways.announced“Based on the tremendous progress these crews made over the weekend and the time it takes to complete the remaining steps, I can now say that we will have I-95 back open this weekend,” Shapiro said in a statement. “We have worked around the clock to get this done, and we’ve completed each phase safely and ahead of schedule.

Demolition of the damaged overpasses and roadway was completed in just four days — ahead of experts’ original predictions. Throughout the Father’s Day and Juneteenth holiday weekend, crews made “significant additional progress” by filling the gap with ultra-lightweight foamed glass aggregate to build up to surface level, officials said.

State Police escorts accompanied trucks carrying loads of the “specially-designed, Pennsylvania-made glass aggregate,” produced by AeroAggregates of North America from Delaware County, up I-95 to the site starting last week. PennDOT hired Philadelphia-based contractor Buckley & Company to backfill the gap, pave over it, and reopen it “safely and as quickly as possible,” officials said.
