A Tiger fan from birth, Missouri's Luke Bauer dreamed of playing football in Columbia. Now, he's living out his dream, and doing so in a special way.
Missouri’s sophomore punter, who grew up in a family of MU alums, always planned to don the black and gold in one way or another.
Luke Bauer's cousin, Andy Bauer, played offensive line for two years at MU before injuries cut his career short. His late grandfather, Scott Fitzgerald, also played at Missouri for a season before transferring to Rolla. The goading didn’t deter Bauer though, he was carving his own path as a punter. When Jack Stonehouse transfered to Syracuse, the opportunity to be the Tigers' punter was back on the table. The entrance of Towson transfer Riley Williams, though, created a fall camp competition at punter, one Bauer lost early on.
With Missouri down 14-0 and and Luke standing near midfield set to receive the snap, Jeff Bauer – and most everyone in the stadium – expected his son to try to pin Kentucky deep, just as he did against Vanderbilt and LSU. Bauer aired out a jump ball down the left sideline to a streaking Marquis Johnson, who high-pointed the ball and carried it into the end zone. The touchdown pass revived a slumbering Missouri team and kickstarted a 38-7 comeback which helped it clinch bowl eligibility and win its sixth game in seven weeks.
