'Trans visibility matters. It helps eliminate barriers. And while I have so many goals for my future, I also know that our time as young people isn’t tomorrow, it’s today. I can be visible now.'
Being out has allowed me to support other trans youth. I am a resource for my teachers, school staff and allies. Sharing our family’s story models that we are just like many other families. We laugh, cry, sometimes argue , and love each other unconditionally.
Sadly, many trans youth are not as lucky as I am. Many are still rejected by their families. Transgender kids around the country arefrom the president and vice president. For every Danica Roem, there are still too many state legislators who want to pass bills that harm trans youth.
To all my peers who hear mean comments, who face bullying and who wonder whether they can reach their dreams, know that you are not alone. In the words of my favorite musical, “I know that we can win, I know that greatness lies in you. But remember from here on in, history has its eyes on you.”
