McConnell will swear an oath to “do impartial justice” when Trump’s trial starts—but that promise will just be empty words
's Senate trial begins after his likely impeachment, the senators who will decide whether or not to remove the president from office will take a straightforward oath: “I solemnly swear that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of [Donald Trump], now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws: So help me God.
The majority leader's blatant view of impeachment as a “partisan exercise” that has no room for actual justice, of course, is not a huge surprise, given that McConnell hashis close coordination with the Trump administration in the lead-up to the trial. “Everything I do during this, I will be coordinating with White House counsel,” McConnell told Fox News last week, adding that there will be “no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this.
McConnell's decision to eschew his Senate oath has not gone over well with Democrats, as Schumer told reporters he was “utterly amazed” that McConnell openly admits he won't be impartial. “Mitch McConnell said proudly he is not an impartial juror,” Schumer said. “The American people want Mitch McConnell to be an impartial juror in this situation.
