'Frankly, I'm ready to retire.'

"Last year, Santa's handwriting looked kind of like yours, and he uses the same wrapping paper as you," she recently told me.

If her younger brother wasn't in the car, I probably would have launched into the speech I've been preparing for years , but he was, so I stalled."We can talk about this later," I told her."I'm happy to answer any questions as long as you're ready to hear the answers." It was an obvious lead, but she didn't take the bait. A few days later, I told my husband I was thinking about spilling the beans about Santa to her, and he was not on team truth. His point was valid; surely she only had aof believing in a jolly man who magically delivers presents to every child on the planet in one night.

How The Lighthouse's Seagulls Got Ready for Their CloseupHow The Lighthouse's Seagulls Got Ready for Their CloseupHow do you talk to a seagull? How do you hold her close to where you are? To hear animal trainer Guillaume Grange tell it, you do it with a handful of dog food, a gentle affect, and nice ambient sounds in the background. They’re sensitive animals, you see. They’re so sensitive, “They always worry about everything,” Grange told Jezebel via phone from England. For 16 years, Grange has worked as an animal trainer for the U.K. branch of Birds & Animals, which provides trained animals to entertainment productions. (He’s been training animals for a total of 23 years.) He specializes in birds, and his past credits include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Game of Thrones. For Robert Eggers’ enthrallingly mad The Lighthouse, Grange was tasked with training seagulls to menace Robert Pattinson’s Ephraim Winslow. And do they ever—they tug at pants, they tap on windows, they squawk bloody murder. Among the many striking things about that movie is just how well-trained the gulls are. I had no idea you could get a seagull to do anything but steal your waffle fries.

Report Finds More Americans Putting Off Children Until Companies Are ReadyReport Finds More Americans Putting Off Children Until Companies Are ReadyWASHINGTON—According to a study released Tuesday that examines the changing demographics of first-time parents in America, researchers at the Pew Research Center found that more young adults are delaying having children until the companies that employ them are fully prepared. “Raising a child nowadays requires parents’ employers to sacrifice a tremendous amount of time and resources, which is why more couples than ever are postponing parenthood until they are absolutely sure that their places of work feel completely secure with the decision,” lead researcher Dr. Emmett Bitton said of the study’s findings, which noted that 50 percent of married individuals choose to wait five years or more after getting hired at a company before sitting down with their supervisor and discussing whether it’s the right time to seek maternity leave or whether their workplace can even afford to let them leave for doctors’ appointments. “The truth is that a lot of these companies are overwhelmed by the thought of employees’ children, and many are wary of the financial burden of having workers who have kids, especially when such employees are already working late many nights a week. For them, it just makes sense to postpone their staff members’ pregnancies as long as possible.” The study found, however, that most companies are eventually able to reach an acceptable arrangement for employee reproduction by offering personnel zero money or resources for the duration of their leave.
