For now, though, there’s the minutiae of the tour to focus on. As an independent artist, Petras has been able to exercise a good deal of creative control over theexperience. The set is inspired by G-A-Y Late, a London gay club, with stairs, levels, and a rotating platform. The lights are old-style rock star. The eight different outfits came to Petras in a dream; she woke up, sketched them, and designed the tour’s aesthetic around them.
The effect is mesmerizing. Petras undulates around the stage in a gold snakeskin bustier and matching boots, twirling an eight-foot braid. She power poses in a striped ’50s-style swimsuit number ripped. She yanks a nude dress dripping in crystal up by the bust before belting out the corresponding song . It’s no exaggeration to say that everyone knows every word. It is, in other words, a really fucking good pop show—which is just as intended.
