The Teamsters are looking for significant wage increases for part-time workers. And UPS agrees an increase is needed — there are proposals on the table to build on the already industry-leading pay and benefits the company offers. The Teamsters just need to come back to the bargaining table and settle on the financials before the current contract expires July 31. The union has said they won’t work past the expiration date.
While I understand and appreciate the Teamsters’ commitment to securing the best wages and benefits possible, UPS is unlike some other companies in that it truly cares about its employees and offers better pay and benefits than the rest of the industry — just look at the numbers.UPS employs 340,000 part-time and full-time Teamsters employees today and offers the highest wages and benefits in the industry.
While the facts do speak for themselves, I also have firsthand experience of what it means to be a part-time and later full-time employee at UPS. I joined UPS in 1985 as a part-time union hourly employee, was promoted to part-time supervisor and then became a driver in Mississippi. Over the following years, I held positions of increasing responsibility in Mississippi and Atlanta before moving to Dallas to lead UPS operations in Texas and Oklahoma.
Throughout my career at UPS, I’ve been encouraged to make the professional development of my colleagues a top priority — something I always felt very passionate about given my own career trajectory. This included a commitment to servant leadership and frequently dedicating time to make a positive impact in our home here in Dallas.
