It is best to call first thing in the morning before the long wait times start, said Amber Leach, a certified divorce financial analyst with Equitable Advisors/R.I.C.H. Planning Group in Morristown.

“It will be either the benefit you are entitled to based on your own work record or the amount equal to half of the benefit that your ex-spouse is entitled to,” she said. “You will not receive both benefits. Social Security will just pay you the highest benefit you are entitled to.”you will need to provide information to Social Security on your ex-spouse, she said.

You will need to show proof of your length of marriage by providing your marriage certificate and the divorce decree.
