A woman got an ambulance bill after she was stuck in an elevator but came out uninjured.
When Susan Elfenbein got trapped in an elevator at her office building in Newark on May 4, she was a little worried, but she wasn’t in need of medical care.
“Emergency medical services then appeared, and although I was unnerved and anxious from the experience of being confined in the elevator, I knew that I did not need medical attention, as I was not bleeding, not unconscious, not unable to breathe or talk,” she said. “They never asked to see my insurance card which would have alerted me that I might be billed. I would have absolutely protested in that case,” she said.
But what happens if you’re not the one who calls the ambulance? Or if you refuse service, like Elfenbein said she did?The EMS Council of New Jersey, which oversees more than 230 volunteer ambulance squads in the state, said most of their squads are volunteer, not-for-profit squads and do not bill for services.
“If you provide emergency healthcare to someone that’s unconscious, someone who can’t refuse, that person can be billed,” he said.
