Imperial wins San Diego Section Division IV finale in four sets over Horizon Prep, while Santa Fe Christian earns Division I title
It was a classic battle between the Lions and Tigers for territory. The Tigers, this time, ruled the kingdom.
Even after Horizon won the first set without the score ever being tied, Imperial and Horizon battled back and forth the rest of the match.The score was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands eight times in the third set.“We love to lose the first set,” Imperial coach Jill Lerno said. “We always play looking over the edge of the cliff, but we rarely fall.
Imperial also got eight kills from Cheney Gomez, six kills from both Alyssa Sanchez and Brisa Necochea, who also had six blocks.Horizon was led by Tessa Russell with 18 kills, two blocks and an ace followed by Victoria Arens with 12 kills and Lisette Durant and Alex Ornee, who each had six kills. Alex Ornee also collected 10 blocks.
But the Tigers held on for 29-27 win to tie the match at 1-1 behind five kills from Garnica-Sanchez and a handful of Horizon unforced errors.
