Here's what's to come on the new SITC spinoff 'And Just Like That.' Which is out tomorrow on HBO.

, whose absence is explained via a professional falling-out after Carrie opted to employ the services of another PR. But this time, the show is turning its microscope inward, focusing on the characters’ emotional interior as they reach middle age. This exploration marks a distinct but welcome tonal shift from the more frivolous moments of seasons past.

The strongest new addition is Sara Ramírez as Che Diaz, Carrie’s frank, funny sidekick on her podcast—yes, Carrie hosts a podcast now, because of course—and a non-binary comedian who rips weed in the elevator to unwind after recording each episode. There’s also Nicole Ari Parker as Lisa Todd Wexley, a woman about town who opens Charlotte’s eyes to the glaring lack of people of color in her life, and Karen Pittman as Dr.

It might be a different show now—and frankly, all the better for it—but there are still glimmers of the same arch playfulness to keep our appetites whetted as we embark on this new journey. The first episode kicks off with a cameo from everyone’s favorite socialite Bitsy von Muffling , while the puntastic, innuendo-laden jokes are dialed back, but still present. “Have you ever masturbated in a public place?” Diaz asks Carrie in an early scene, to which she replies: “Not since Barney’s closed.

It’s a delight to see Charlotte’s kids all grown up, with Lily a star pianist at her high school and Rose a tomboy resenting her mother’s attempts to truss her up in a floral Oscar de la Renta dress for a recital. Needless to say that Harry Goldenblatt’s return, skating through the hallway of their pristine apartment, is as lovably goofy as ever.

The show knows that, too. On paper, it might be considered a tall order to try and radically transform such a beloved formula into something more weighty, but the characters are strong enough to withstand this shift.
