In 'Open,' author Rachel Krantz shares the complicated truth of her first open relationship

has all the makings of a juicy beach read—romance, sex, deception, and twists—except that it’s an “obsessively documented” account, per Krantz, of her real-life open relationship. A journalist, Krantz recorded conversations, clashes , and therapy sessions, supplementing her personal story with social and cultural context and data.

Over the course of that relationship, and in your reporting for the book, did you observe any shifts in the visibility or acceptance of CNM? I didn’t fantasize about getting married. Because my parents are divorced, I had some skepticism. What I had was an intense desire to find “the one”; hoping someone’s going to complete me and I’ll feel like I’ve arrived at my adult life. I was a serial monogamist. I would fall in love quickly, often with someone who was incompatible, and then gradually begin to feel bored and trapped, or see ways in which we would not be good in the long term, and then break up with them.

You’d had an attraction to women before getting into an open relationship with Adam but hadn’t fully pursued it, right? How did CNM lead you to learn more about your sexuality?
