Netflix is taking over Manhattan's Paris Theater and turning it into a place where it can screen its prestige film and TV projects

The Paris, a 71-year-old theater on 58th Street in Manhattan, had become a treasured resource for the kinds of people who love indie, arthouse and foreign films that for decades were difficult to find just about anywhere else. It also was the last single-screen theater in Manhattan. Facing those and plenty of other economic pressures, the Paris closed this summer when its lease expired. Netflix used the theater this fall to premiere and showcasethe celebrated relationship drama featuring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson that Netflix produced with writer-director Noah Baumbach.
Here in awards season, having that sort of well-positioned venue for major projects, one close to a lot of people who work in the film and TV business, could further contribute to big iron when it comes time for Golden Globes, SAG-AFTRA Awards, the Oscars and all the rest.
