A record drought is changing the ways Texas farmers and ranchers are trying to survive.
Avery Blanchard feeds alfalfa to cattle at Grassfield Farm near Hondo on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022. The farm is having to buy alfalfa to supplement the nourishment for their cattle and pigs amid a drought that limited feed supply and made it more expensive.HONDO — This past summer, Fohn Bendele had to sell 50 of his cows at a livestock auction.
Additionally, Bendele said the ranch is purchasing truckloads of hay from New Mexico for $2,500 every two months rather than every six months — and spending about a thousand more every month of irrigation. “Ranchers have to go out and buy feed when prices are sky-high because everyone is also looking for feed, and we didn’t produce that much hay this year,” he said. “So they have to buy from further and further away, but that means transportation costs on top of the hay.”
“Texas has the tendency for multiyear droughts,” said Sid Miller, commissioner for the Texas Department of Agriculture. “The last major drought we had started around 2010 and didn’t let up until 2015.”
