In Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis is leaving behind orphans and children in need | Opinion

Children look out of the window of an unheated Lviv-bound train, in Kyiv, Ukraine. A growing number of children in “baby houses,” or orphanages for children two years of age and younger didn’t evacuate when the war began and are being left behind, writes Rick Morton. It’s been a year since Russia first invaded Ukraine, and the war rages on. To the extent that anyone discusses it at all these days, the war and our efforts to support Ukrainians are framed as a partisan funding battle.

Even if there were a ceasefire today, the world would be left grappling with a new long-term set of problems. The vast human toll of the war isn’t ameliorated by funding, and it won’t disappear with the end of the conflict. We must lean into long-term support for the vulnerable children and families of Ukraine, and we must do it soon.

But Russia has had a year now to disrupt important infrastructure, including the destruction of roads and gas supplies. Now, those same partners who fled for their lives at the outset of fighting have returned to Ukraine, and they’re struggling to find usable roads at all for their transport. They need all-terrain vehicles, blankets and wood as they confront months of bitter cold.
