Derogatory comments about the prophet Muhammad by members of India’s ruling party have diplomats struggling to contain an international public relations crisis.
Senior party officials last month launched a “Know BJP” campaign aimed at foreign diplomats in New Delhi. In a succession of meetings, diplomats were told that the party’s agenda hinged on the economy, not religious issues. The party embraced an inclusive slogan of “unity of all, development of all,” party officials said.Leaders from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh , the Hindu nationalist organization that is closely affiliated with the BJP, have also spoken about the need to lower temperatures.
