India told to crack down on gender violence, religious discrimination and ratify torture convention, as countries including US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Nepal and Bhutan rake over its human rights record

Human rights groups have expressed outrage over release of 11 Hindu men, convicted in the gang rape of Bilkis Banu, a Muslim woman, by the right-wing Indian government earlier this year.

"We recommend that India reduce the broad application of the Unlawful Activities Act and similar laws against human rights activists, journalists and religious minorities," said Michele Taylor, the US ambassador to the council. Nepal said New Delhi should "strengthen its efforts to combat discrimination and violence against women and girls".
