Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold wanted to put a focus on practical effects. “No volumes, please.”

Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold prioritized the use of practical effects. Though Harrison Ford has returned for a fifth and final outing as the titular archeologist and adventurer, Indiana Jones 5 is the first film in the series not directed by Steven Spielberg. Instead, the Disney-owned Lucasfilm sought the services of James Mangold to replace the legendary director.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Now, Empire's new Indiana Jones 5 cover story reveals some insight into how Mangold tackled the franchise's fifth installment, including prioritizing practical effects. During early pre-production meetings for Indiana Jones 5, Mangold politely insisted, "no volumes, please," anytime the VFX technology was mentioned.

The same cannot be said for 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is when the film series suffered its first significant drop in quality in the eyes of critics and audiences. Among its many issues, the fourth installment was criticized for its overuse of CGI. This includes its notorious CG gopher scene and the extensive use of VFX to bring its extra-terrestrial elements to life, such as aliens, interdimensional portals, and a massive flying saucer.

While Mangold prioritized the use of practical effects and rejected The Volume, Indiana Jones 5 does use CGI technology to significantly de-age Harrison Ford for an opening flashback scene. This could be perceived as a contradiction to Mangold's commitment to practical effects. However, the risky decision to de-age Ford was motivated more by necessity rather than a creative decision.
