Indiana Jones narrowly escapes with his life in The Last Crusade’s Venetian catacombs, but this was one getaway that wouldn’t have actually succeeded.
Despite Indiana Jones’ knack for survival, he never could have survived the catacombs in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The famed archaeologist’s ability to get himself into a series of seemingly never-ending conflicts rarely disappoints. That being said, not every situation that Indy finds himself in offers the most realistic conclusions.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In Last Crusade, Indy arrives in Venice and explores the canals beneath the library with Elsa Schneider. Aside from the enormous number of rats who inhabit the area, the catacombs are flooded with petrol, forcing Indy and Elsa to wade through the knee-deep mess in search of the tomb of Sir Richard, one of the three Knights of the First Crusade.
Simply breathing in that amount of fuel in such an enclosed space would have quickly caused problems for Indy and Elsa. The catacombs would have been a toxic place, and spending even the small amount of time in there would have resulted in effects ranging from nausea and vomiting to heart failure.
Indiana Jones' Catacombs Escape Wouldn't Have Worked As mentioned, Indy does manage to escape the catacombs in his signature death-defying style. It’s a moment in the film that happens relatively quickly, and audiences are so caught up in both the suddenness of the attack as well as the mystery of it that analyzing the escape isn’t an immediate priority. As far as classic Indy escapes go, however, this one is hard to accept.
Cementing what should've been Indy's demise in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is that no air pocket would exist beneath the coffin. The liquid beneath the coffin would also have been petrol, meaning it all would have gone up in flames. What’s more, dropping a match into that much petrol would have caused a massive explosion.
