The Indiana Senate voted unanimously on Monday in favor of a bill that would require coroners to test some overdose victims for the veterinary tranquilizer xylazine.

The drug, intended for use in sedating large animals, is growing in popularity as an adulterant mixed with opioids like fentanyl and heroin, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.Sometimes called “tranq,” xylazine was first identified as an adulterant among recreational drug users in Puerto Rico in the early 2000s, and has since been documented across the continental United States.

House Bill 1286 requires that if a coroner reasonably suspects that the cause of a person’s death was an opioid overdose and the individual was unresponsive to an overdose intervention drug, the coroner must test the decedent’s bodily fluids for xylazine. The bill passed both both chambers of the Indiana state legislature with unanimous support and now awaits the signature of Governor Eric Holcomb.

Porter County Coroner Cyndi Dykes said that the bill is an important step in treating a growing problem.
