Who will make the final cut for the Indianapolis Colts? It's time to finalize the 53-man roster following preseason action.
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Marvell Tell breaks up a pass intended for Cleveland Browns wide receiver D.J. Montgomery during the second half of an NFL preseason football game in Indianapolis, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019. Tell was called for pass interference on the play. With the preseason now officially over, it's time to trim the roster down. Going from 90 players to 53 is a tough exercise for NFL teams, but especially for a deep roster like the Indianapolis Colts.
Even with Andrew Luck's sudden retirement last week, the Colts are still loaded all across the board. Not only do the Colts possess the best tight end room in the NFL with Eric Ebron, Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox, but the young up-and-coming defense is well built on all three levels. The preseason featured intriguing battles for the final few spots at tight end, running back, cornerback, swing offensive tackle, and now backup quarterback. Without further ado, let's dive into the final predictions:Entering the Brissett era, who will be his primary backup? It sure seems like Chad Kelly, the former Denver Broncos QB2 before his arrest, will enter that role but there's a catch.
The deepest position on the Colts' roster is their defensive line, which is a great change compared to year's past pre-Ballard. Houston and Sheard will be the primary edge rushers on this team, but Turay and Banogu have flashed plenty throughout preseason. At defensive tackle, Autry and Lewis/Hunt will be the three main players rotating in while Stewart and Ward provide depth. Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus wants plenty of fresh bodies on his defensive front.
