The Rouen University Hospital-Charles Nicolle in the north of France has fallen victim to a ransomware attack with consequences reminiscent of the WannaCry attack that hit U.K. National Health Service hospitals in 2017.The attack, which hospital IT staff discovered late on the evening of November 15, is understood to have impacted all five sites the hospital complex covers.

Hospital IT was still operating in degraded mode on Monday, November 18, according to reports in French newspapers. It is understood that it will likely take much of the week to restore systems to their standard functionality, with priority being given to those involved with patient care. That's with the hospital IT team getting assistance from the French National Agency for Information Systems Security.

What we do know, according to those reports, is that just like when WannaCry struck the NHS in 2017, some medical staff were forced to return to old-fashioned ways and use a pen, paper and the telephone instead of email to keep the necessary lines of communication open between caregivers and various hospital services. No patient data was affected, but there have been inevitable delays in patient care.
