The first sign of trouble for Denver’s 2022 wide receiving corps and perhaps the offense overall stopped training camp practice in its tracks Aug. 2.
The first sign of trouble for Denver’s 2022 wide receiving corps stopped training camp practice in its tracks Aug. 2.
On that day, Denver planned to deploy a trio of Patrick, Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy at the season’s outset and then work KJ Hamler in as he recovered from hip-and-knee surgeries. That group was expected to give Wilson an enviable combination of size on the perimeter and speed in the middle of the field in his first season in Denver.
Wilson has been forced to help get a bunch of inexperienced players up to speed on the fly. Denver’s offensive staff has been tasked with figuring out what the group can handle on a week-to-week basis. And the Broncos front office has had to devote extra energy to the daily concerns of filling out an injury-plagued unit — Who’s available on the wire? How many practice evaluations does each rookie have left? — while also formulating a long-term plan that’s grown murkier with each passing week.
After Patrick’s injury, Hamler played 40 snaps in the opener but then just 23 combined over the next three weeks as the Broncos tried to get him up to speed. He had four games of essentially a full workload before pulling a hamstring in practice four weeks ago and re-aggravating it Wednesday. Sutton has played 688 snaps of Denver’s 740 this season, a 93% play rate that ranks fifth in the NFL for receivers, per FootballOutsiders data, behind only Carolina’s D.J. Moore, Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson and Las Vegas’ Davante Adams and Mac Hollins.Sutton, then, has played more this year than the Broncos’ expected No. 2-4 receivers combined.Hinton went undrafted in 2020 and, until this season, was best known for starting a game at quarterback during the COVID season.
