The biggest board game meetup in San Francisco was also the coolest event in Salesforce Tower. This is the story of how a group of Dungeons and Dragons fans created a vibrant community in the city’s downtown.
A spread of games is arranged for a night at the Rincon Center Salesforce cafe, where a game night grew from a group of friends to a full-blown board game community from 2016 to 2018.But the Salesforce employee’s weekly board game group was struggling. Their regular nights of Dungeons and Dragons: Lords of Waterdeep, a complicated strategy game that is best with four or five players, kept getting interrupted.
To get the word out about their newly public event, Tobener and his friends used Meetup, the popular events platform. He said he was surprised when five or six “pretty brave” new players showed up to the first publicized night at Rincon on Sept. 27, 2016. Each game night, players would come together at 6 p.m. around a stack of board games and split off into groups. The intensity ranged widely: Some people would meet every week for the newest iteration of a cooperative quest; others would just hop into the nearest open game of Codenames or Mafia. Gameplay typically ran until 9 or 10 p.m.
Organizers set up a Valentine's Day spread for the group's first themed meetup in February 2017 — some board gamers brought dates. As the game night crowd continued to grow, the company got more involved, providing spare catering for a few events, holding a recruiting night and chipping in money for the occasional board game replacement.
The social scene expanded far beyond the company and its cafe; a majority of attendees ended up coming from outside Salesforce. Maggie Li, another original organizer, said a group of word and social deception gamers got especially tight, bonding over raucous rounds of Werewolf, Avalon and Taboo. They’d stay late — sometimes until 2 a.m. — to get more games in and hang out on the weekends, going on park picnics, out dancing or even whitewater rafting.
