As profits have gone up, so has CEO pay. Compared with last year, the analysis from Alvarez and Marsal shows pay for the top executive rose 12 percent at production companies, and shot up nearly 26 percent at oil-field services firms.
But it’s important how that compensation package is structured, Ivy said. It needs to be competitive with peer companies and include performance metrics valuable to the business. Over the years, Alvarez and Marsal’s analysis has noted an uptick in annual bonuses tied in part to meeting certain environmental goals, part of what the industry calls “environmental, social, and governance,” or ESG, metrics.
