Investigators claim that the Tesla Model 3 driver killed in the Florida crash was using Autopilot
Share to twitterThe roof of Jeremy Beren Banner's 2018 Tesla Model 3 was sheared off when the car struck a semi-truck trailer in Delray Beach, Florida, on March 1, 2019.Safety officials investigating a deadly crash in Florida in which a Tesla Model 3 driver was killed in a collision with a commercial truck said the electric-car maker’s semi-automated driving system was being used at the time and that neither it nor the driver took evasive action.
“Preliminary data from the vehicle show that the Tesla’s Autopilot system—an advanced driver assistance system that provides both longitudinal and lateral control over vehicle motion—was active at the time of the crash,” the report said. “The driver engaged the Autopilot about 10 seconds before the collision. From less than 8 seconds before the crash to the time of impact, the vehicle did not detect the driver’s hands on the steering wheel.
The Delray Beach crash is one of two fatal Tesla incidents in Florida the NTSB is investigating. A week earlier, a, Florida, veered across three lanes of traffic and slammed into trees in the median. The collision, which killed driver Omar Awan, damaged the car’s battery pack, which erupted in flames.
"We are deeply saddened by this accident and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy."
